High School/Middle School Office
Hello Sandy Creek Middle and High School Students and Parents,
Wednesday August 28th - 6th Grade Orientation in the Auditorium 6PM
Wednesday September 4th - All students return
Planning Ahead
Friday October 3rd -5th Homecoming Weekend
Please enjoy your last couple of weeks of Summer. The following are some important keys to a successful school year.
Communication (My door is always open)
Please feel free to call or email me with any questions, at any time throughout the school year. I prefer to deal with any needs or concerns through phone calls or personal meetings if the need arises. I will utilize parent square in order to notify large groups all at once. I never consider any question a silly question or any problem too small to deal with.
Attendance/School Day (We can and will educate any student who is present)
Our school day begins with homeroom at 8:15. If a student is absent, we ask that you call the attendance office to provide information on the reason for your child’s absence. Please note that an automated call will go home when a student is not in attendance. Students who are late to school must check in with Mrs. Mintonye in the main office.
Students will not be allowed to sign out unless a parent picks them up or a guardian-signed note is provided with a valid excuse. A valid excuse includes: personal illness, illness or death in the family, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at a health based center or other medical visits, approved college visits, military obligations, and absences approved in advance by the Principal. In order to combat chronic absenteeism, which is where a student misses 10% or more of the school year, we will be closely monitoring these trends throughout the District. Please note that if your child is truly sick, we ask that he/she stays home. Academic success is closely linked to attendance; the better the student’s attendance, the more likely he/she will be successful with course expectations.
***Students who are late or sign out of school without a legal excuse, or permission from the Principal or Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, will not be allowed to participate in athletics or extracurricular clubs and activities, that are not graded or for credit associated with a class, for that day.
Electronic Devices (There are enough positives to focus on at school on without personal devices)
According to the student code of conduct; “personal electronic devices are not allowed to be out in school between 8:15-3:05. If students do bring their devices to school they must keep them in their lockers.”
Technology (Devices provided by the school are for school work)
Chromebooks will be distributed during the first days of school. If one was not turned in last school year, one will not be distributed until that one is accounted for. It is important to note these devices are the property of the school and are instructional tools. Our technology department does a wonderful job keeping updated and effective devices in the hands of our students. It is imperative that students treat these instructional tools with respect and keep
them in good working condition. There is a cost associated with these devices and if a student breaks one, a bill will be sent home.
BOCES (A great “opportunity” and alternative for some students to classroom only instruction)
Students who have elected to attend the vocational technical school (BOCES) will begin on day one of the school year. All students will be transported to the Mexico campus by school buses. BOCES buses will leave the school at 8AM.
**The New Visions program and the Electrical Wiring programs will be held in different locations and bus times will vary from the Mexico campus.
Breakfast will be available to students who arrive in time before departure. Driving to any BOCES program is not allowed. Exceptions may be considered for individual days if it is approved in writing by BOCES and presented to the HS Principal at least two days prior to the day a student needs to drive. Failure to follow this procedure will result in serious and immediate consequences,
It is critical to me as a person and as a school administrator that every individual in the district feels safe and welcome to all of the “opportunities” that we provide. If at any time you feel that you or a member of your family would like to work with me to help improve or access these opportunities, please feel free to contact me. I am excited about continuing to be a part of the great things offered here at Sandy Creek Central School in the 2024-25 school year.
See you soon,
Steven M. Newcombe
