Music
Throughout the school year, many events take place such as sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities. However, there is a group of people who are not recognized as much as other events. In our school, you have the choice to join chorus as well as band. The teachers of these classes, much like their students, have their own character, and joy for music.
The chorus groups held between the grades six all the way up to seniors, are instructed by Mrs. Kinney. Mrs. Kinney is now on her seventh year working for Sandy Creek, and is teaching four different choirs this year which include sixth grade chorus, middle school chorus, mixed chorus (grades 9-12), and show choir. This year is her largest middle school group, containing forty-five students, and "the talent in each group seems to grows yearly," says Mrs. Kinney. Upon asking "what keeps you going?" she replies, saying her "love for great music and high expectations" is what keeps her working. Also, she believes that many of the students in her groups love to sing and listen to music, saying that the students look forward to their time spent in the class and this also keeps her spirits high, knowing that she has "great, hard-working students." This year, Mrs. Kinney wishes to have her students achieve more confidence and pride, and hopes to portray it during the winter and spring concerts, also wishing to "create a synergistic group where everyone is working together to create beautiful and emotional music."
On the other side of the spectrum is the band program. The band groups, from grades seven up to twelve, are conducted by Mr. Artini. Mr. Artini has been working for the Sandy Creek band for over twenty years. There are two groups that are taught, which include the middle school band (grades 7-8), and the senior band, which includes grades 9-12. After asking him what he enjoys about the band, Mr. Artini replied by saying that "energy and spontaneity of music" keeps him going. Mr. Artini also stated that "getting a full band together to rehearse is like being inside a combustion engine" and that "there's nothing else like it". Mr. Artini wishes to expand the size of the Marching Band and unlock the power that the band possess. He believes that the band has "skilled musicians at all instruments, and a talented Colorguard". Mr. Artini says that he has the perfect song for this year's marching band, and you will have to come to the local parades to see what it is.
The Sandy Creek music programs are sometimes forgotten about under the commotion of all the other activities, but there are truly fascinating happenings inside those classrooms.
