Comet Pride is Community-wide!Girls Varsity Soccer
October 27th, 2016 by Jasmyn Williams
The Lady Comets of the Varsity Soccer team played a long and tough season which only built them and made them stronger for upcoming seasons to follow.
Going into the season this year, returning varsity coach, Matthew White who had in later years coached Boy Varsity soccer for Sandy Creek, and assistant coach, Lyndsay Grandjean, a former athlete for Sandy Creek, had obtainable goals set for the girls coming to play for them. When asked what his first thoughts were when he was asked to coach again White stated, "When the Girls varsity soccer position opened, I was excited about the opportunity to return to coaching at the high school level. I have coached both girls and boys soccer in the past, but for the past few years, I have been coaching indoor and outdoor teams at the youth soccer level. I have always enjoyed coaching girls. I have two daughters, so I feel that I can relate well to my female players. ". With having the experience in coaching, the goals White had set were precise. Answering the question of what the goals were that he had for the Lady Comets in the 2016 season White answered, "My goals for this season were to make sure my players had a positive, memorable experience this season. I want my players to look back on this season and remember the fun they had, the challenges they overcame, and the growth they made. Coach Gandjean and I tried very hard to make practices challenging and focused, while at the same time making sure the girls progressed as athletes and had a fun time doing it.", keeping the season fun and enjoyable for the girls was at the top of Coach White and Coach Grandjean's list of priorities.
While keeping the season productive, both coaches had to meet and make the tough decision whether to keep a Junior Varsity team or to just have a Varsity team. Coming to a conclusion, the Junior Varsity team was cut from the 2016 season. White informed us, "Not having a JV team this year was tough. Unfortunately, the number of players we had just didn't allow us to field both a JV and varsity team. As a result, we had a very young team this year. Many of our varsity players were freshmen and sophomores who would normally be playing on a JV level team. This meant we often went up against teams who were bigger, stronger, and more experienced. On the positive side, this meant that many of our younger players were forced to step up their game and rise to the occasion. At the same time, our older players stepped up and set a great example as leaders and role models for our younger girls.".
With that being said, the girls moving up dug deep and found a way to work together to finish out the 2016 Varsity season. White gave a thorough answer when asked what he saw in the future for the Lady Comets, "I see our team becoming much stronger and more dominant in the upcoming seasons. As I stated earlier, we have a very young, but talented team. Experience, size, and strength will come with time as these young players grow and mature as athletes. I see a very successful future for Lady Comets soccer. I look forward to working with this talented group of young ladies for many years to come."
It is believed that with the hard work and dedication from the girls, the Lady Comets will build themselves up to be on top in upcoming seasons.
With that being said, best of lucky to the Varsity Girls Soccer team next season. Stay determined and stay dedicated and you girls will be able to accomplish anything thrown your way!
