Having started in 2015, Robotics class is a fairly new edition to the Sandy Creek curriculum. In the Robotics class, students receive basic and system-specific information and skills for robotics. The students also learn about the engineering design process and how to code. The class is taught by Mr. DeGone, who also coaches the after-school competitive team, [Co.R.E.], or "Comet Robotics Engineering," which last year placed 160th at the Vex Robotics World Championship. The after-school team is based on the annual Vex competitions, which is called "Starstruck" this coming season.
Sandy Creek has two teams competing in Starstruck this year: the "Z" team, led by Logan Hatch and Oren McDougal, and the "X" team, which is lead by Alex Olin and Ashleigh Rosenbaum. In addition, the team also has two full-time coders: Oren McDougal and Margery Yousey. Emily Ward is assigned as head scout, and there are several other scouts that help out with various tasks assigned to them. Overall, the Sandy Creek robotics teams are doing spectacularly well, and placing "top tier" at all of their events! Recently, the Z-bot earned a 1st place award during the Syracuse City Robotics tournament, as well as a first place skill award at the Rome Free Academy tournament. The team as a whole earned a design award at the Livonia tournament. The "Z" team has currently secured a spot at the state championships on February 18th, and the "X" team still has two more chances to qualify.
Mr. DeGone highly encourages students to join his class if they are planning on going into fields such as engineering or coding. If you are in 7th grade or higher and are interested in robotics or participating in a fun after-school program, please come check out the robotics team in room 1710. Open enrollment for the next robotics season will begin in May of 2017.
