End-of-the-Year Tips for Studying

We are nearing the end of the year, meaning summer is just around the corner - but so are final exams and the Regents. It's important to refresh and review things you learned back in the fall - even if it's only for a few minutes each day. Here are some things to keep in mind while reviewing:
- Study in small intervals. Review the material for fifteen minutes or so, and take a five minute break to get up and walk around. Working too hard for too long can be counterproductive.
- Look at your notes, and, on a separate sheet of paper, write down the information the way you would paraphrase it in speech. Converting the generic wording of a note packet into language that feels more natural to your brain will help the information sink in - and stay.
- Organize information into categories. Not only will breaking concepts down into smaller pieces make them more manageable, but it will allow you to make connections you may not have seen when the information was first presented to you.
- If you are a more visual learner, try to link certain images to facts or quotes to help you remember them.
- If you listen to music while working, try listening to one song on repeat - it will eventually become white noise, making it stimulating without being distracting.
Keep in mind that everybody learns in a different way. Figure out what works best for you, and persevere.
