Sandy Creek softball has achieved great lengths as the years have gone by. The softball program is a vital part to the community and the team gets recognized greatly. The program has been built substantially over the years with the dedication of the coaches. Pat McDougal was one of the many coaches throughout time. The team she coached ended up winning the New York State Softball Championship in 1997. This was the very first time in Sandy Creek history that this was accomplished. It was a very big deal considering a town this size was recognized for winning a state title. The dedication from the coaches, players, and fans has continued. A couple years later, Bill Fowler took charge of the Varsity team and with his own daughter on the team and being surrounded with a gifted team it was an estontioning experience to win yet another state title in 2004. Since then, the program has been growing. Sandy Creek has won Frontier league,Section Titles, Regionals, and competed in the state tournament. However, this program does not dwell on any losses. A loss is something that they learn and get better from. Sure, it may be difficult, but the previous failures is how the team prosperes. Last year, Sandy Creek made it into the Section 3 Title game and took a tough loss against Cooperstown,1-0. Carley Stoker, the captain for this year's team and last year's team states, "The loss in the sectional title game only makes our desire for victory to go farther this year." So, the new team has been putting in the work. With previously losing 3 seniors there are only 5 returning varsity softball players such as Freshman; Lainie Hathaway, Sophomore; Hannah Dasno, Juniors; Savannah Brown and Carley Stoker, and lastly Senior; Jasmyn Williams. The team brought four JV players up including Junior; Madison Yerdon, Sophomore; Alison Lantry, Freshmen; Riley Dowlearn and Marley Yerdon and an 8th grader, Olivia Pappa. The team may be young but has improved tremendously from the beginning of the season. So far the Comet's are 6-1 winning against Alex Bay, Sackets Harbor, Belleville, Lafargeville,Thousand Islands, and Beaver River. Recently, they took a loss against Lowville 2-1, but the team is grateful for the learning experience and for having it happen early in the season when a loss does not end the season. The team has been lead by Coach Katie Soluri and Coach John Stoker following the captain's Jasmyn Williams and Carley Stoker. The team takes on one win at a time being humble and respectful towards all. Furthermore, they do not celebrate any game; not until they win the whole thing. Come support the Comet's as the season continues.
