2016-17 was a very successful season for the Sandy Creek [Co.R.E] robotics team. Out of the 10,000 teams that competed worldwide, only 568 teams made it to the world championships, including our own. [Co.R.E] secured their spot in the championships after earning the title of number one in the entire state of New York.
The team spent months perfecting their tactics and robot. Coached by John DeGone, the team was lead by co-captains Alex Olin and Logan Hatch. Also on the team were scouts Garrett LaPoint, Emily Ward, and Ashleigh Rosenbaum; coder Margery Yousey and Public Relations Manager Sydney cook. Though they worked valiantly, [Co.R.E] placed 238th in the world after facing several unforeseen technical difficulties in relation to how their robot interfaced with the competition fields. In the tournament of skills, in which teams attempt to score as many points as they can in one minute in both driver and autonomous modes, [Co.R.E] was placed 56th. Mr Degone credits the team with staying positive and determined through the entire competition.
According to the team, VEX was much more than just a robotics competition. It was a cultural experience, in which they were able to meet teams from all over the world, from Canada to Malaysia. Teams displayed items of cultural importance in their booth, and our team was able to experience first hand the vast complexity and cultural variety of the world, and even made friends along the way.
What the [Co.R.E] robotics team was able to accomplish this year was extraordinary, and we wish them all luck during their next season starting in the summer of 2017-18.
