Comet Pride is Community-wide!Traveling to Costa Rica
May 22nd, 2017 by Emily Kehoe
This Spring Break, the Spanish Club went to Costa Rica for about nine days. It was a very good experience, and I would recommend that others should travel on the next Spanish Club trip if they can. Every day was full of activities, each with different things to offer. While relaxing by the pool, or tanning on the beach was a lot of fun, we also went on a lot of adventures and learned a lot about the country.
While in Costa Rica we went to a lot of different nature reserves and saw a lot of the wildlife in its natural habitat. It's a very different experience from going to the zoo because you never know what you're going to see. For example, we saw a wild tarantula walking around, which is a rare sight because tarantulas are nocturnal. Also, at Manuel Antonio Beach there were wild White Face Monkeys trying to steal people's things, which was an interesting sight. There were many different strange plants there, too. For instance, there are the trees that grow fruit where cashews come from, and plants that look like flowers but are actually leaves. The wildlife is very different from the wildlife here in New York.
Not only did we learn lots about the wildlife, but we learned lots about the culture too. On Good Friday we watched an Easter Procession, and it was very interesting to see how the people celebrate. Also, one of the days we were there we went to an elementary school. The school was very poor and small. It had about three classrooms, and each class consisted of kids of all different ages. While we were at the school, the kids sang the anthem of their providence and performed some dances for us. The kids there get taught English at a very young age compared to us. Although their English wasn't the best, they tried to have conversations with us and show us around their school. The whole trip was a captivating experience and made me appreciate what we have here more.
