Varsity Girls Soccer

Varsity Girls Soccer
The 2017-2018 Varsity Girls Soccer team had a difficult season but they carried themselves very well. The girls were coached by Mr. Matt White. The team consisted of 20 girls ranging from freshmen to seniors. The seniors were Cassidy Carnes, Carley Stoker, and Maggie Vazquez. They were followed by their underclassmen Violet Graf (jr.), Bailey Fahnestock (jr.), Alison Lantry (jr.), Carly Lyndaker (jr.), Shelby Miller (jr.), Emily Paternoster (jr.), Elice Babcock (so.), Tiaira Copenhaver (so.), Bella Cornell (so.), Sarah Balcom (fr.), CJ Barney (fr.), Catie-ann Blodgett (fr.), Elsa Graf (fr.), Michaela Kastler (fr.), Hailey Miller (fr.), Alyssa Rudd (fr.), and Kerigan Trudell (fr.).
The team's overall record was 0-1-14. Maggie Vazquez served as goalie through the whole season and did a great job. Stoker led the team with two goals while Bella Cornell and Elsa Graf each contributed a goal. When asked how the season went, Vazquez replied with "I mean, yeah, we didn't win a lot of games but we had a lot of fun losing and I thought we became more of a family despite the extreme losses."
When asked why they enjoy the sport of soccer, Stoker replied with "I love the competitiveness of the sport." and Carnes replied with "I enjoy playing on a team sport and being a part of that team has taught me the value of various skills like patience and understanding." When I talked to Coach White, I asked him first what made him want to coach. His response was "I used to coach when I first came to Sandy Creek and coached JV girls and enjoyed it. Then my children were born and I didn't coach as much and I missed it." When talking about his hopes for the next season, Coach White stated "We want to improve our record and get some wins. What I hope for most is to see a better chance from youth soccer to modified and varsity number wise, and maybe even have a JV team."
