"Students Against Destructive Decisions" is a school based program with a vision to empower young people to make positive decisions that advance their health and safety. This program also allows students to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them throughout their daily lives" says adviser Mr. Klopotowski (also as Mr. K.). Mr. K has been an active advisor in this program for 13 years. I asked him how long SADD has been a program at Sandy Creek Central School District? and he stated " I am not sure".
I asked Mr. K "How the group and him make this happen?" He stated "We accomplish this by creating, equipping, and sustaining a network of student-run chapters in schools and communities focused on peer-to peer education."
SADD fosters a sense of belonging and promotes resiliency, leadership and advocacy skills so that young people make positive life decisions that will carry them throughout life. SADD plans to have a gathering each month so the students can discuss how they can positively influence their peers regarding destructive behavior. Bi- yearly the SADD participants coordinate a before prom mock DWI accident for 11th and 12th graders. They work closely with the local Fire Departments and Emergency responders in order to make this a success.
Mr. K has hopes for the future. He would like to plan movie nights on friday and/or Saturday nights at the school. This will allow the students at Sandy Creek Central School a safe activity to promote positive behaviors instead of potentially destructive ones.
