Comet Pride is Community-wide!Battle of the Books
January 28th, 2018 by Annie Chen
An exhilarating year is ahead for this year's Battle of the Book. With 59 participators this year, Rachel Allen, the program's coordinator said, "I'm so excited to have so many people in Battle of the Books this year! This is one of the largest number of participants I've had." Only a month had passed since the program had begun, many participants have flown through the books from this years list. This is a sign of fierce battles between the teams in the near future. Let's all wish them good luck!
Battle of the Books motivates memorization, teamwork, and reading comprehension. Students are asked sixteen questions based on a selected book list for their grade level. Within 30 seconds, the team must write their response consisting of title and author. Answers with the correct title and author receive eight points and five points are given if only the title is correct. Teams compete at the district level first, with winning groups of each grade level moving on to represent our school at the county battle. During the 11 years Sandy Creek has engaged in Battle of the Books, the high-school level has won four times in the county while the middle school has won once. This year's group are hoping to add on to these achievements
The Sandy Creek District Battle for the 2017-2018 season will be on February 13, 2018, at 6:00 pm, in the high school auditorium. The fun battles, competitions between faculty members and students will be held on February 15, 2018. These battles are held throughout the school day. The Oswego County Battle will be held on March 15, 2018, at Phoenix High School.
