Comet Pride is Community-wide!Environmental Club
January 28th, 2018 by Anthony Catania
The environmental club is one of the many clubs our school has to offer to its student. This club is one of the informational but fun clubs. Lead by Mrs. Sheehan, Mrs. Johnson, and Mr. Krenrich. There are 25 members in the club. Becca Miller as president, Nic Potter as Vice President, Emily Smith as secretary and last but not least Tori Jenkins as the money man. The club has been in operation for three years now. In the three years they have put on "Clean the r Creek" which is in the spring. The club gets the biggest group they can and they spend a Saturday cleaning up the community. They have also been mountain biking as their second big and exciting trip. The first year they went to a house that was made out of completely recycled materials, the main structure of the house is made out of tires filled with dirt.
Mrs. Sheehan started the group, since then Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Krenrich have joined in on the fun. While talking with Mrs Sheehan, I asked her why she created the group. She told me she felt that "students needed more information on scientific careers". This year the club has several guest speakers. The first speaker is a forensic specialist that specializes in the bodies of wildlife. The next speaker is an alumni panel of high school graduates talking about their experiences in college.
There are some big upcoming events this year. The largest and most physically demanding is the trip to Howe Caverns. Howe Caverns is a gigantic cave in the Catskills, which is southeastern New York. The cave goes 100 feet below ground and has a river in the bottom. If you are lucky you can catch a ride on the boat at the bottom. Another upcoming event is the annual soap sale. The soap is locally owned and is 100% organic with very little packaging, which in turn means little waste products. The most important and one that hits home the most is clean the creek which as said before is s day to clean or community.
