How long have you been a teacher?
16 years
What do you like about teaching at Sandy Creek?
I went to school here therefore I know the families of the students I teach. Having a connection with the parents allows me to connect with the students better than I would had I not attended school here.
What are a few of your favorite memories that have been created during your time as a teacher?
One of my most recent memories is when Zeke Durham got accepted into the Naval Academy, after we had worked so hard to complete the initial steps. Another memorable experience that I have gained was watching one of my former students graduate after struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.
Have you noticed any differences teaching high school students compared to teaching seventh grade students?
Teaching a high school class is not much different than my seventh grade classes because all students are young at heart and enjoy fun and silly activities. Most high school teachers believe that when teaching older students the classes should be more of a lecture but when I was teaching the high schoolers we participated in activities that I would have done with my seventh graders.
What is it like to teaching family members?
It is both rewarding and difficult, because I expect more from them than I do the other students. I get disappointed when I see them acting a certain way and know they should not be.
Is it difficult to manage your time between coaching and teaching?
Yes, I'm very forgetful. I often forget my clothes for practice I'm shocked I haven't forgotten my kids!
Why did you want to become a teacher?
I had mentors at Sandy Creek that inspired me to become a teacher so I could inspire students they way my teachers inspired me. I was also interested in working to better the financial situation in our district with a community garden and involving myself with the poverty team.
What is your favorite part of the day?
My favorite part of the day is Lunch Bunch, which is when high school students come into my room and we "discuss world problems". In which I mean the dramas of high school.
