Comet Pride is Community-wide!Opening day in Sandy Creek District goes smoothly despite high temperatures

Opening day in the Sandy Creek Central School District went off without a hitch in spite of Mother Natures heatwave that sent temperatures into the 90s during the first two days of school. Teachers positioned fans in the classrooms to provide some respite from the sweltering heat but the students seemed unfazed and were more excited to reunite with friends and get back to the business of learning. By Friday, temperatures had eased and you could almost feel fall in the air.
Physical changes, including the site improvements to the bus circle and adjacent parking lot at the elementary school worked to smooth opening day congestion and provided a safe and secure area for parents to drop off and pick up their children at the close of the day. Additional parking was created and a new door added for parents to enter the east side of the elementary school and sign their child out at the end of the day. The one way in, one way out plan created a cohesive flow for traffic and increased security in the school for the safety of students being picked up and those still in the building.
New this year, the Community Eligibility Provision provides one free breakfast and one free lunch to students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade in the district. The federal program reimburses the district for the meals served and was implemented in Sandy Creek and other districts in Oswego County with poverty rates that meet the guidelines. Parents are asked to fill out and return the income verification applications to ensure that the district continues to meet the criteria for inclusion as well as eligibility for Title I funding.
