Two local volunteer fire departments were recent visitors at Sandy Creek Elementary where they shared information about fire prevention and what to do in the event of a fire. The two departments, Sandy Creek and Lacona were the special guests at morning program at the school and presented to specific age groups following the morning program. Targeting the younger grades for more in-depth training, the fire fighters donned their gear and moved around through the students to assure them that they should not be afraid of a fireman with their equipment on.

The fire fighters shared information about the importance of going through a drill at home to inform everyone in the family of what to do if the smoke alarm sounds in their house. They talked about establishing a meeting place, getting low to evacuate the house and what to do if they are trapped in their room without a safe way out of the house. In addition, prevention was a major topic of discussion with the students and the importance of not playing with matches, lighters, candles or other items than can cause a fire.

The fire departments gave the students “honorary” firemen hats and special pencils during their visit.
