The cheerful faces of Sandy Creek students and their families recently filled the halls of the elementary school as they participated in the inaugural STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Family Fun Night!

The commons area was packed as it showcased the fifth-grade science fair, displayed Crast Family Farms honeybees and allowed attendees to try out the game that was built by the districts award-winning robotics team, SCCS Co.R.E. The gymnasium was transformed into a space for math and movement challenges. Student artwork adorned the walls of the building, students could learn and practice coding, door prizes were given out and families enjoyed free dinner in the cafeteria.

The event was planned by the Elementary Family Events Committee, comprised of Elementary Principal Tim Filiatrault and teachers Jacob Pauling, Cammie Holmes, Kristin Wood, Ashley Walbroehl and Annie Shirley. Members made the decision to merge previously smaller events to create a brand-new night of fun, science, math, engineering, technology, math and celebration.

This is the first large event that we have been able to host since the pandemic, said Filiatrault. The turnout far surpassed our expectations, and it was worth all of the hard work to see the joy on the students faces.

Generous funding from the SCTA, the administration team, the Elementary Student Council and the Elementary Climate Committee helped cover the costs of food and some prizes. Little Caesars donated the pizzas, the school library contributed new books and Home Depot donated building kits.

Sandy Creek Board of Education member Michele Warner attended the event and had nothing but praise for the school and the committee. Thank you to everyone involved for executing a fun and successful event for the community, she said. I cant wait to attend with my family again next year.
