Representing Sandy Creek Middle School in one of the oldest and most iconic competitions, the Scripps National Spelling Bee, three seventh grade students rose to the top of the spelling list: Luke Yerdon, Robbie Patterson and Matt Trudell. Yerdon, who took the top spot, and Patterson, who finished second will advance to the next level of the bee in Syracuse. Local champions will take a written spelling test and the top students will advance to the bee on February 11th televised on WCNY television and sponsored by WCNY and the Post Standard.

The national bee began in 1929 when nine newspapers joined together to host a spelling bee. Now decades later, more than 10 million students compete for the title of spelling bee champion. The National Bee will be held in the Washington, D.C. area later in 2017.
