The fourth and final Oswego County Academic Youth (OCAY) League competition tested teams from area high schools with their ability to solve a series of puzzling tasks.

Titled “The Puzzler’s Quest,” the final event featured a break out box where teams had 30 minutes to solve several “language” clues to determine the combinations for five locks in order to successfully enter the breakout box. Only one team, APW’s, was successful in completing all five of the puzzling locks to gain access to the box.

Communication was key in another task when one student read and studied a current event article and then using the telephone game style relayed the information to a second student who then took a test on the subject. Another task required the team to fill in the blanks on some of history’s most important documents and another required some foreign language translation skills and then identification of the document translated from either Spanish or French into English.

All the while, students were busy working on 600 pieces of a 1,000 piece puzzle without knowing what the final puzzle would look like. The teams, in completing the other tasks, could earn additional points, and receive another 100 pieces for each successful task in order to complete their puzzle in the time allotted.

The final task was the trivia power hour where questions on a variety of topics, like history, geography, entertainment and language, to name a few, were asked in a fast paced game to earn additional points for correct answers.

At the close of the competition, when all points were totaled, the team from Central Square earned the gold medal, Oswego took second place and the silver, and the team from Mexico took home the third place bronze medal.

With their second place win, the team from Oswego earned enough points to secure the overall championship for the 2017-18 OCAY League season. The team will take home a trophy for the year and their name will be added to the OCAY League Championship plaque commemorating their outstanding season.

OCAY League was organized in the spring of 1997 with the idea that academics merit a standing comparable to athletics.  Students’ academic skills are challenged and showcased in a wide variety of competitive events that emphasize scholastic excellence, team building, leadership, and creativity.  A particular strength of the league is its emphasis on cooperative problem solving. OCAY League is coordinated through the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation’s gifted and talented program.
