A recent Monster Match between students in Heather Wallaces first grade class at Sandy Creek Elementary School and a school in Copiague, NY on Long Island proved that students from very different areas, and backgrounds have more in common than might have been thought. The students connected via a distance learning network facilitated by the DL program at the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation at CiTi BOCES as part of a Halloween-themed Monster Match.

Students in each class create a monster using paper, boxes, art supplies and easily found items and develop detailed instructions for their match class to follow and vice versa. The students must create a matching monster by following the instructions and then during the video conference compare their monsters with the other schools creations. They also noted the similarities in their creations and the differences between their monster and the ones the other school created from their directions. They talked about what they could do differently next time and the importance of explaining the details and communication for completing the task.
