With a focus on family, fun and literature, the Sandy Creek Central School District recently held a family reading night featuring Dr. Seuss inspired games and activities.Nearly 150 elementary school students and their parents participated in the event. Families showcased their creativity as they colored characters from Dr. Seuss books, made hats, participated in a reader's theater and assembled puzzles. Other events included a photo booth, scooter races, beanbag tosses and relay races. In addition to the activities available, attendees also enjoyed food in the cafeteria. High school students in Marissa Paquin's gourmet foods class prepared fresh fruit cups and a cake for dessert. Pizza was provided by Two Brothers' Pizza."This is the greatest turnout we've had in a long time," said SCCSD reading teacher Jennifer Gestwick. "Our high school National Honor Society kids came to help serve the food, the gourmet food students made dessert. It's nice to see so much student and family involvement."Families also had a chance to win door prizes and take home bags filled with pencils, rulers and math manipulatives. Overall, with the giveaways, activities and family atmosphere, the event was a resounding success, said Sandy Creek Elementary School Principal Sue Ann Archibee.
