A focus on academics and a commitment to schoolwork translated into success for students in the Sandy Creek Central School District who were recently recognized for excelling in the classroom. Hundreds of middle school and high school students earned accolades during a year-end ceremony held in the school auditorium. Family members, teachers, and administrators were on hand to congratulate the award recipients. "You're here tonight because you've gone above and beyond," said SCCS Superintendent Stewart Amell. "Continue to be the best you can be, it will pay off in the long run." The effort was evident as one student after another walked across the stage to accept award certificates in every subject area. Additional recognition was given to students who had perfect attendance, showed academic improvement, exhibited tremendous character and overcame adversity. Following the middle school recognition, upperclassmen were honored for their achievements as well. Scholarships worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were presented to college-bound seniors and outstanding juniors. The largest scholarship award was given to Jay Ivison, who earned a full ride to George Washington University courtesy of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. According to Staff Sgt. Holt, a marine who presented the $180,000 check to Ivison, the scholarship criteria was strict and involved a mix of academic achievement, involvement and physical fitness. Even with such high demands and specific criteria, Ivison exceeded the requirements in all areas and earned the prestigious scholarship. "I hope your determination to excel continues into your future," Amell said to the award recipients. "I'm proud of your accomplishments."
