Students at Sandy Creek Elementary are testing just how far Principal Tim Filiatrault will go to encourage his school to read. How about dressing up as a favorite Dr. Seuss character and reading to the pre-kindergarten classes who won the recent reading challenge by reading the most as a class? No problem. Filiatrault, aka the Cat in the Hat, visited the morning and afternoon classes where he shared the book “Green Eggs and Ham” dressed in full Cat in the Hat gear and also brought along a special snack for the students’ reward.

In the past few months, Filiatrault has built snowmen outside with the students in grade one, played tic tac toe with kindergartners and now Pre-K students enjoyed their special visit by the Cat! These reading rewards have all been part of the Reading Grand Prix at the school since the beginning of the year. Studies show a direct correlation between reading and success in school, and Filiatrault appears willing to do just about anything to encourage his students to succeed. Who knows what we will see next!
