August 25th, 2025 by Melinda Brancato
On Monday, August 25, 2025, the Sandy Creek Central School District held its annual Stuff-a-Bus event, providing students across the district with backpacks and supplies to start the school year prepared and ready to learn.
The event, made possible by the generosity and donations of organizations, such as United Way, Climate Committee, the schools Student Council and additional donations, that keep the program returning. Organizations such as Help Me Grow Oswego County and Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) were also there to show support at the event, by providing information about further resources accessible to members of the community. Families attended to receive backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, crayons, binders, and other essentials, helping to reduce the financial stress of back-to-school shopping.
Sandy Creek Elementary School Principal, Tim Filiatrault praised the community effort, saying:
"This is my 9th year at Sandy Creek and I'm always so impressed with the generosity of the local community organizations that help to make sure that we have the supplies and backpacks to hold this event each year. Our teachers and support staff are amazing and show up every year to help us get the backpacks filled and distributed to our students. It's a great event to kick off a new school year!"
Teachers, and support staff volunteered their time to sort and distribute supplies, ensuring every student received what they needed.
Sandy Creek Special Education Aide, Misty Gibbs emphasized that Stuff-a-Bus is more than just a distribution of supplies it's about setting a positive tone for the year ahead. As said by Gibbs:
"When teachers, families and students come together, school starts with joy, support and community."
As the 2025 - 2026 school year begins, Sandy Creek Central School District remains committed to ensuring every child has the tools and support they need to succeed.
