Sandy Creek claimed first place at the most recent Oswego County Academic Youth League (OCAY) competition of the year.
Students, Simon Preston, Haidyn Soluri, Leia Wall, Grant Harris, Lyndi Fitzgerald, Alyvia Brown, Maiah Owen, Lynn Dumas, Abigail Jones and Rowan McCarthy made up the team.
The OCAY League event is an annual hands-on learning competition that brings together students from districts across Oswego County. The event promotes teamwork, problem-solving and friendly competition through interactive challenges.
The first competition featured a murder mystery theme, complete with physical crime scenes, quizzes and popular references such as Sherlock Holmes. Students applied skills from their classrooms to solve challenges in a collaborative, high-energy environment.
"I've been on the team since my freshman year," said Sandy Creek senior Haidyn Soluri. "I've competed a couple of times, and to finally win was very exciting. Using my experiences from classes like English have helped me pay closer attention to details, use problem-solving skills and improve on my communication skills whether it be written or verbal. I think we all worked well together."
The OCAY League event provides students the opportunity to develop critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills while enjoying a spirited and supportive competition. Sandy Creek's victory highlights their dedication and teamwork throughout the event.
OCAY League is coordinated through the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation. For more information about the OCAY League and upcoming events, visit CiTiboces.org.
