Students in the Sandy Creek Central School District, part of the Middle School Student Council, have created handmade placemats for local seniors. The placemats will be donated to the Senior Dining Center in Pulaski and to seniors who receive home-delivered meals in the Sandy Creek area.

"We needed a service project, and we decided we wanted to help the elders in our community that are struggling to get out," said Harper Fahnestock, eighth-grader and president of the student council.

Students in grades six through eight worked on the placemats as a way to give back to their community and spread a little joy to local seniors. Some placemats will be used at the Senior Dining Center, while others will be delivered directly to seniors' homes.

"When thinking about this project we realized that making placemats was a good idea to help make people smile, and it was something we could do in class with our friends," said Addisyn Liszewski, eighth-grader and vice president of the student council.

The project reflects Sandy Creek Central School District's commitment to its mission of fostering academic excellence, character and community engagement. Through its vision of preparing students to be responsible, caring citizens and the "Be Good Comets" initiative encouraging kindness and service, students are empowered to make a positive impact in the community.
