The Sandy Creek Central School District welcomes Tim Filiatrault as the new elementary school principal, replacing Bonnie Finnerty, who has taken a position with the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation.

Filiatrault comes to the position with an extensive background in education, particularly at the elementary level, where he has served as a classroom math teacher, AIS math teacher and instruction math coach. He has also taught math at the high school level and holds certification in K-6 and 7-12 math. He earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from SUNY Potsdam and a CAS through SUNY Oswego.

In addition to teaching for many years, Filiatrault has also coached varsity soccer, varsity volleyball, jv and varsity baseball and it was through that coaching that he became very familiar with staff and the reputation of excellence found in the Sandy Creek Central School District.

When he learned about the elementary principal opening, he was enthusiastic about applying. “I knew some of the people who worked here through coaching and teaching and thought, I would be a good fit in the district,” he said.

Filiatrault and his wife, Nicole have three children: Timothy, who will be a senior in the LaFargeville School District next year; daughter Kayla, who will be a sophomore; and youngest, Marisa, who will be in sixth grade in the fall. With his son in his final year of school, Filiatrault plans to commute to Sandy Creek for the coming year but anticipates relocating following their son’s graduation.

Filiatrault has begun to transition to the principal position by spending time in the district where he says everyone has been tremendously welcoming.

“The people have been awesome here,” he said, “from the first night of my interview, to walking the halls with teachers, everyone has been welcoming. It’s easy to see,” he continued, “that everyone is here for the kids. Which is why we do what we do.”

He will begin as principal at the school on July 1.
