Author, psychologist and Sandy Creek alumnus Dr. Michael Gilbert recently returned to Sandy Creek Central School to visit students and share books he co-authored with his wife, Jessica Sicherman. Titles included "The Lion, The Rabbit and The Puppy," "Monday Morning" and "The Gift of Wonder."

"Returning to my alma mater was important to me as a way to give back to the community that helped shape who I am today and to honor my father, whose dedication and presence were a big part of this school," Gilbert said.

All students in prekindergarten through fifth grade received a book to take home for the holidays. The stories help children understand emotions, build empathy and recognize positive qualities within themselves.

Dr. Gilbert read "The Lion, The Rabbit and The Puppy," which explores how emotions are meant to be felt and embraced. He also led students in calming breathing exercises using an expanding ball.

A 1985 graduate of Sandy Creek, Gilbert has worked as a school psychologist for more than 35 years. His father, Richard Gilbert, served as the district's elementary principal for many years.
